Everyone always wants to know how to get more visitors (aka traffic) to their web site. In today’s world of online trading getting to number one is harder than ever and takes the knowledge of a specialist in the field to keep up with the latest at search engines. Google in particular tweaks it’s algorithm for calculating rank every three months.
In times past getting to number one is fairly easy as if you wrote your content in a certain way and then do a few link exchanges then you’ll get up the ranking. In those days referral traffic was where the major gains could be made. Back then referrals from links was the number one source of new visitors to Web sites.
Times have changed. To get to number one it takes far hard work. You still need to write good targeted copy and do a few link exchanges but not as many as before – Not all links pages are indexed by Google anymore and some even have a negative affect on a Web site depending what sites you are linking too. For every link you do, you should be thinking how it benefits your site. If the page where your link will appear is not even indexed in Google then you will only get clicks from that site and relatively few at that. After all who visits a Web site to look at a links page.
You may think clicks from your web sites generates loads of visitors for directories but in reality between 20-25% of the total traffic comes from clicks on links. A good 50% comes from searches at Google and Bing. Up to 20% comes from people typing in Sinsearch.com on their browsers and the tiny percentage left from social media.
Even though social media provides relatively poultry direct traffic it is heavily used by Google to calculate how popular a Web site is and therefore it’s ranking. It works on the idea that if I Web site is being talked about a lot then that site must be more popular than those sites without recent social chatter. This unfortunately means a lot of work for indirect and hard to measure results.
Social network traffic to outside Web sites is not always the best quality. You’ll notice the higher bounce rates that correspond almost entirely to increased social network traffic and this bounce rate metric is again used by Google to measure a sites popularity. Thus doing too much social media can actually damage your business in some instances.
Social networks are largely designed to stop people looking at outside content and so the sort of visitor you will get is one that looks at one picture or article before returning back to the social network. It’s up to you as a content producer to design text and images to make sure they click somewhere else on your web site too before leaving.
What is even more annoying is Googles algorithm changes slightly depending on the type of Web site you have. So a directory or dating or personal site may or may not be treated slightly differently.
