Running a website used to mean picking a template and writing a bit of copy. Now it means SEO, AI search, coding, hosting, and security all landing on your plate at once, on top of the business you’re actually meant to be running. What does having a website actually require now?
More than most people realise when they first put one up:
- SEO – how you get found on Google, and it keeps changing.
- AI search (AEO) – Chat GPT, Perplexity, and AI-powered search now answer questions before people even click a website.
- Coding and updates – plugins break, themes go out of date.
- Security – sites get scanned and probed constantly, whether anyone notices or not.
- Speed and structure – Google penalises slow, messy sites, without telling you.
Each one used to be optional. Now they all compound, and they all need attention at once.
Why is this so hard?
There’s no marketing department. No IT person down the hall. It’s just you, fitting this in around actual client work, admin and everything else already competing for your time. Most businesses have someone dedicated to this. Most Mistresses don’t, and are expected to just absorb it.
What happens if it gets left?
Nothing dramatic, usually. That’s the trap. It just drifts slowly, fewer people find you, older content quietly loses ground to competitors. By the time it’s obviously a problem, it’s already cost months of visibility and potential clients.
Do you need to become an expert in all of this?
No. Nobody’s suggesting you learn to code or become an SEO specialist on top of everything else. The actual skill is knowing when something needs someone else to look at it, so you don’t have to.
